Freight House Lofts: Historic area offers lofts, tax abatement
Located in the historic Freight House District at 2029 Wyandotte St. a few blocks from popular eateries Jack Stack Barbecue and Lidia's Restaurant, Freight House Lofts offers 33 one- and two-bedroom loft homes.
The four-story building was constructed in 1929 and served as the distribution and manufacturing center for Safeway Stores. The building renovation was completed in 2001, creating distinctive lofts in a variety of floor plans. Units feature polished hardwood floors, modern kitchens, soaring concrete ceilings and 780 to 1,480 square feet of living space. In addition, each unit includes access to secure storage.
The building is constructed of heavy concrete, providing increased energy efficiency and noise reduction, the development team said. Large, light-vent windows and a rooftop garden showcase spectacular views of Crown Center, the Liberty Memorial and Union Station, according to the development team.
Freight House Lofts is within walking distance of the Crossroads Arts District, fine restaurants, casual dining, jazz clubs, coffee houses, specialty shops and more. The community is secured by a wrought-iron fenced lot, with a single parking space for each homeowner. Select condo units come with carports.
The amenities package includes a fitness center with Precor equipment and a Jacuzzi hot tub. The Freight House Lofts development team is offering new homebuyers a seven-year tax abatement, which amounts to an annual incentive payout of $1,500 on a one-bedroom condo and a $2,000 annual incentive payout on a two-bedroom.
A "sister project" — Stuart Hall Condos — will open near the Freight House Lofts in 2009 in the Stuart Hall Building. Originally constructed in 1910, the building was once home to the National Biscuit Co., now known as Nabisco. Interested buyers can lock in a sales price now with a lease-to-own option. Additional cash incentives offered at closing could provide instant equity, the development team said.
