Sentinel Lofts at 1003 Walnut is KCLoftCentral’s newest preservation project in the heart of Downtown Kansas City, Missouri. Originally constructed in 1914, the Sentinel Federal Savings Building is part of the East Ninth Street–Grand Boulevard Historic District and was designed by noted architect Frederick Gunn. Today, this distinguished structure is being thoughtfully restored into a boutique mixed-use community that honors its historic character while embracing modern living.

Modern Loft Features with Restored Historic Details

At Sentinel Lofts, four floors of residential and commercial space come together in a seamless blend of historic charm and contemporary design. The upper floors feature spacious one- and two-bedroom loft apartments crafted with comfort and quality in mind. Each residence includes oak hardwood flooring, stone countertops, in-unit laundry, tile showers and oversized windows that fill the space with natural light.

Residents are welcomed home through a beautifully restored lobby featuring original terrazzo flooring, rich wood paneling and mid-century modern lighting. On the first floor, a striking commercial suite showcases vaulted ceilings and original marble accents, paired with updated mechanical and electrical systems for modern efficiency.

Additional amenities include a fitness center, social lounge and private storage areas creatively located within the building’s original bank vault on the lower level. Convenient and secure resident parking is available adjacent to the property on the south side.

Walkable Downtown Living Near the KC Streetcar

Located on Walnut Street, Sentinel Lofts offers a pet-friendly living experience just one block from the Kansas City Streetcar. This prime downtown KC location means residents are just a short ride away from the River Market’s local culture and the energy of the Power & Light District.

Spend your weekends exploring the Farmers Market, enjoying local dining or hopping on the streetcar for First Fridays in the Crossroads Arts District. At Sentinel Lofts, the best of Kansas City is right outside your door.

Sustainable Loft Living in a Historic Kansas City Building

Sentinel Lofts is among the first residential properties designed in alignment with Kansas City’s new sustainable building standards. Energy-efficient features include LEED-certified fixtures, smart thermostats, enhanced insulation and modern building systems designed to help reduce overall utility costs.

By preserving and repurposing the original structure rather than demolishing it, this project significantly reduces construction waste and environmental impact. Reusing core materials such as steel, concrete, wood and glass also minimizes the need for new resources compared to ground-up construction.

With direct access to the KC Streetcar, RideKC bus routes and nearby bike stations, residents can enjoy a connected, low-impact lifestyle without relying entirely on a vehicle. Living at Sentinel Lofts means choosing a home that balances historic preservation, modern comfort and sustainable design.
