Conservation through Preservation

At KCLoftCentral we believe in conservation through preservation. This means saving and restoring historic buildings that can be reimagined and repurposed to provide much needed housing for Kansas City. Demolishing old buildings for new construction is not only wasteful but it also tears down the fabric of our shared history. All of the buildings owned and managed by KCLoftCentral are historic rehab projects that have been painstakingly undertaken to help preserve these Kansas City stories and the environment. Our residents enjoy a sense of sustainable social responsibility knowing that they are living at a community that prides itself on preserving our local history and our planet.

By choosing not to demolish these structures and instead reusing a historic building’s bones and exterior facade, we can substantially reduce the amount of waste going to our local landfills. And by recycling through reuse the original elements of steel, concrete, wood and glass we require less construction material inputs to create housing units as compared to new construction of a similar scale.

Our newest preservation project is the Sentinel Lofts located at 1003 Walnut in Downtown Kansas City, Missouri. The Sentinel Federal Savings Building was built in 1914 and is located in the East Ninth Street-Grand Boulevard Historic District. This handsome structure was designed by architect Frederick Gunn and is now being rehabilitated into a boutique mixed-use building. Four floors of loft apartments and commercial space with a seamless blend of natural finishes and historic charm. On the upper floors you will soon find one bedroom and two bedrooms lofts with first class design, craftmanship and convenience. The first floor will double as the residential lobby and provides space for a dynamic commercial suite. Onsite resident perks like a fitness center, social lounge and private storage are being built on the lower level inside the old Sentinel Bank vault. Convenient and secure resident parking will be available directly adjacent to the property on the southside. The building is located on charming Walnut Street which is only one block from the Downtown Streetcar. This location provides great central proximity to both the diverse culture of the River Market and the modern buzz of excitement in the Power and Light District. Check in with us early next year for availability and pricing at this distinctive new location.
