Revel in the Revival

Kansas City was recently ranked 10th out of 28 must see travel destinations in 2019 by National Geographic! Most visitors to this Midwestern city come for the barbecue and all that jazz but soon find themselves caught up in an urban renaissance. Recent additions include the 21c Museum Hotel Kansas City, a $50-million reinvention of the 1888-built Savoy Hotel and Grill, and the free RideKC streetcar. The two-mile route stops near the National World War I Museum, where Great War Centennial Commemoration events continue in 2019. An American flag flies outside most of the homes. The lives inside also match. The men and women here have all served their country in uniform. And every one of them was homeless before

BY SARAH GISH sgish@kcstar.com June 14, 2018 05:30 AM In 1915, Hotel Bray opened at 1114 Baltimore in downtown Kansas City. At nine stories tall and just 25 feet wide, the 100-room hotel had the whimsical look of something you’d see in a Wes Anderson movie. The New Yorker features 29 affordable units, most under $1,000 a month. The century-old building once housed the Hotel Bray and, later, The New Yorker Inn. The building’s new owner, KC Loft Central, preserved its quirky character while converting it to a modern apartment building.  The New Yorker opened June 1 with 29 compact

The New England Wins Project of the Year

The New England Building was built in 1886-87 by the New England Mutual Life Insurance Company of Boston, Massachusetts. Located at the northeast corner of 9th and Wyandotte Streets in downtown Kansas City, Missouri, the historic landmark “is an unusual example of late nineteenth century Renaissance Revival commercial architecture.” Among its distinguishing features are its south and west exterior walls, which were constructed of rosecolored, rock-faced, Springfield sandstone from Massachusetts; round-arched entrances on the west and south; and a two-story oriel window at the southwest corner of the building. Except for some of the interior finishes, the seven-story, 54,680 square
